white dwarf linux was compiled to make development with JUMPtec's DIMM-PC and MOPS boards easier.
white dwarf linux is named for a White Dwarf Star. White Dwarf Stars are small but extremely dense stars. white dwarf linux is small enough to load in 16MB of Flash, but dense enough to contain the features that embedded applications demand including:
- A graphical package-based installer
- Compatible with glibc 2.1.x binaries
- TCP/ip tools including ftp, telnet, ping, hostname, ftpd, telnetd
- A stripped down Apache 1.3.x web server
- gcc development tools for libc5
- ppp drivers and scripts
This small distribution of Linux can be installed over the Internet via FTP or from a CD. The network install version consists of a 1.44MB bootdisk and a 1.44MB rootdisk. The CD install version consists of a 1.44MB bootdisk.
Currently v.1.1 is a package-based install, which can be from 5MB to >50MB depending on the options chosen. It is designed to install directly to the DIMM-PC's onboard flash or a chipDISK flash drive on the MOPS boards, or to an IDE Drive. white dwarf linux will support IDE (hard drives and CDROM), Ethernet, TCP/ip, Telnet, FTP and WWW (Apache 1.3.x). In addition, v.1.1 has beta support for glibc. glibc 2.1.x binaries can be used with white dwarf without having to recompile the older libc5 libraries. This allows easy copying of binaries from Slackware 7.x and RedHat 6.x with no changes to white dwarf. Full support will be included in version 1.2.
